Best First-Person PlayStation 5 RPGs

Most of the big RPGs that are playable on the PS5 are in third-person. For example, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth are two of the biggest RPGs on the system, not to mention all of the backwards compatible titles from the PS4 generation and beyond, thanks to PlayStation Plus.

For first-person fans, there aren’t a lot of quality ones to choose from, but from the slim pickings there are, these ones stand out. They will be ranked based on the overall quality and not just on the first-person experience. All in all, they are all worth getting for RPG fans out there aching for something new on the PS5.

Dead Island 2

Hollywood Horrors

Facing a crusher in Dead Island 2 (2023)

Dead Island 2 is not fully an RPG, which is why it is the lowest on the list, but it’s certainly a fun and visceral romp through L.A., fighting hordes of zombies. As players build up their characters, they can unlock new skills and craft better weapons. Slicing up zombies with swords is all well and good, but adding electricity is even better.

Players can also make good use of the environment to kill zombies by kicking over an oil drum and lighting it on fire, for example, and it’s these over-the-top examples that keep the combat feeling fresh.

The Forgotten City

A Smaller But Complex RPG

Rome in The Forgotten City (2021)

The Forgotten City is probably a game that slid past a lot of RPG fans initially, and while it isn’t a combat-heavy game, it does have deep RPG mechanics. Set within an underground Roman city in the present, players have to investigate the ruins to solve various mysteries, and attacking anyone will activate golden statues.

There is a time loop mechanic similar to The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask that players have to manipulate when they make mistakes or need to take a new path to expand knowledge. It can be a lot to take in at first, but patience will lead to an unforgettable story that is part fantasy, part sci-fi, and all compelling.

Borderlands 4

The Party Shooter Of RPGs

Shooting enemies with fire bullets in Borderlands 4 (2025)

Borderlands 4 is probably the best new game in the Borderlands series since Borderlands 2. It still didn’t find a villain quite as infectious as Handsome Jack, but the open-world design and mechanical tweaks made it a more fun shooter.

Each of the four characters is distinct, and they can all branch off into three separate skill classes, like having the Siren, Vex, summon demonic versions of herself or familiars. Then there’s the new digital bike, grappling hook, guns, and of course, co-op support, which all help the overall gameplay loop stay addictive.

Destiny 2

A Great Ongoing Experience

Shooting enemies in Destiny 2 (PS5)

Destiny 2 has been going strong since 2017, going from different versions to new consoles and bolder expansions. Numbers dip between seasons, but every time something new comes up, the fanbase is back at it again, and that’s the sign of a good game.

It’s one of the best shooters on the PS5 thanks to Bungie’s design. It may lack the gun variety of Borderlands 4, but players know that every new weapon they pick up in their hunt for loot across the galaxy will fire accurately. With the character-specific powers, players also get to add an en extra oomph to the firefight.

Avowed

Better Than Ever

Attacking enemies in Avowed

Avowed was released exclusively for Xbox consoles last year, besides PC, and now Obsidian Entertainment has helped bring it over to the PS5, and it’s better than ever. There are improved frame rates, new content, greater controls, and more. The new bells and whistles are all good, but the core build of the game was fine just the way it was.

Players get to create their character, have dialogue choices that matter, first-person melee combat that actually feels engaging, and an incredibly well-defined magic system. The only detractor is the segmented worlds, as some would have loved a true open-world experience, but that’s only a minor gripe.
