The contract was signed with ARTEC, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for the BOXER system. ARTEC is a joint venture between KNDS Deutschland and Rheinmetall Landsysteme.

Under this agreement, a total of 72 Boxer Ambulance vehicles will undergo upgrades.

These enhancements include new medical equipment and the integration of advanced digital radios as part of the Bundeswehr’s Digitalization of Land-Based Operations (D-LBO) project.

The first deliveries of the upgraded ambulances are scheduled to begin in 2027.

The variable ambulance mission module in the Boxer sgSanKfz enables it to transport different numbers of casualties, depending on injury type. It also allows for intensive care support.

In addition, the ambulance is claimed to maintain the same level of protection as the Boxer infantry fighting vehicle.

The Boxer Ambulance spans 8.33 metres (m) in length, 2.99m width, height (roof) of 2.94m, and has a top speed exceeding 100km/h.

The vehicle includes a flexible stretcher carrier system that can be configured for various mission scenarios and contains medical equipment suitable for a range of field operations.

Its crew compartment measures 17.5m³ and is designed to offer high protection and mobility both on and off road.

Recently, KNDS Deutschland was tasked for the production of 38 Boxer sgSanKfz ambulances and ten Boxer driving school vehicles for Bundeswehr use.

This contract awarded by ARTEC, includes an option for up to 150 additional ambulance vehicles and 100 more driver training units.

In July 2025, Bundeswehr received the first Eagle 6×6 Medium Protected Medical Vehicle variant from General Dynamics European Land Systems (GDELS).

BAAINBw, the German defence procurement agency, ordered 80 Eagle 6×6 vehicles in April 2020.
