Next-Gen Toyota Corolla Will Be All Things To All People, Gas Engine Included

UPDATE: March 31, 2026

Added information on the IMW Origin, another vehicle that is part of Toyota’s “For You” strategy of specific vehicles for everyone.

Toyota has announced that its upcoming, 13th generation Corolla will not only be a halo model offering mass-market appeal, but, in a surprisingly frank admission from the Japanese manufacturer, will also be a vehicle “someone would want to drive.” This development path stems from the Japanese marque’s recently launched For You brand strategy, which, in further good news, is set to keep combustion engines at the forefront.

An Emotional Connection With The Corolla?

Announced last fall, the For You brand strategy – derived from the ‘To’ and ‘Yo’ of Toyota, and first used back in 1989 – sits beneath the Group’s all-encompassing Mobility For All message, and represents the Toyota brand specifically. By tailoring its products more closely to the needs of its myriad customers worldwide rather than the lowest common denominator, it is hoped this will help build an emotional connection between its vehicles and its customers.

This does not mean, of course, that the mass-market Toyota Corolla, which has been sold as a mainstream hatchback and sedan (and very briefly as a station wagon) since 1966, will be marketed as the car for all customers of all walks of life worldwide. This instead appears to be a strong push for mainstream Toyotas to be seen as something other than soulless white goods.

On that note, while specific energy conditions for each market and hybrid technology were referenced in Toyota’s open letter, the marque was quick to emphasize that development of its internal combustion engines won’t be ending any time soon. Apt, given that a new hybrid V8 was revealed late last year. In fact, Toyota flat-out said “there are still many places where it’s impossible to live without a combustion car” in Toyota Times.

The 2027 Toyota Corolla, images of which were also leaked last year, is expected to launch with a downsized, albeit more efficient, 1.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder. This replaces the outgoing 1.8-liter example in the facelifted 2025 hatchback/sedan. A full plug-in hybrid, and even potentially a full battery-electric model, is expected to follow shortly afterward.

Toyota Has A Weird Modular Truck “For You,” Too

Toyota uses the low-cost, build-it-yourself IMW Origin truck as a further example of the brand’s For You concept. Rather than tweaking an existing model for specific markets like Toyota Utes for Australia, the company developed the modular IMW Origin specifically For You in Kenya, and nobody else. It was created with Kenya’s poorly maintained roads in mind, as well as its predominantly motorcycle-based road network.

The assembly kit nature of the truck helped keep costs down and actively created jobs in Kenya. In this form, it’s a vehicle that Toyota would struggle to market anywhere outside of Kenya. But the concept of a modular vehicle that can be tailor-made for specific segments or regions caters to the all-encompassing strategy of something specific – for you – that can still work for everyone.
