Marine Corps Birthday: November 10 Traditions Honor a Legacy Dating to 1775

WASHINGTON – Each year on November 10, Marines worldwide mark the founding of the Corps with ceremonies that tie present-day service to its Revolutionary War origins. The date traces to November 10, 1775, when the Second Continental Congress called for “two battalions of Marines” to serve with the Continental Navy. While the Corps was re-established in 1798, its official birthday has been observed since 1921 under Marine Corps Order No. 47, issued by the 13th Commandant, Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune.

Origins of the Marine Corps Birthday

The origin date stems from a Revolutionary-era resolution that created the Continental Marines for naval service and expeditionary missions. Those first Marines fought in the Caribbean and at sea before the unit was disbanded after the American Revolution. The United States Marine Corps was formally re-established in 1798, but it was Lejeune’s 1921 directive-Marine Corps Order No. 47-that formalized the birthday and linked the Revolutionary “soldiers of the sea” with the modern amphibious force that would later fight at Belleau Wood, Tarawa, and Fallujah.

Traditions That Define the Day

Early celebrations were modest. The first formal Marine Corps Ball took place in Philadelphia in 1925, featuring a memorial plaque at Tun Tavern-widely regarded as the Corps’ birthplace-followed by a dinner at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel. Some events were unusually creative; a 1937 celebration even presented a cake shaped like Tun Tavern.

Today’s signature ritual, the cake-cutting sequence-first slice to the guest of honor, second to the oldest Marine present, and third to the youngest-was not codified until 1952. Each step underscores continuity and mentorship within the ranks, symbolizing the transfer of knowledge and responsibility across generations.

Continuity Amid Change

Lejeune’s 1921 order arrived during a period of institutional uncertainty, when the Corps faced congressional scrutiny and budget pressures. By directing the annual observance, he anchored the Marine Corps’ identity in an enduring narrative. The order’s language of honoring “the illustrious record of the Corps” combined historical recognition with strategic reassurance, reinforcing the Corps’ distinct purpose and ethos.

The Tun Tavern story remains central to Marine lore, though some historians note recruitment records that may point instead to Philadelphia’s Conestoga Wagon Tavern. Regardless of the precise location, Tun Tavern endures as a powerful symbol of origin and shared heritage.

Modern Observances Around the World

From embassy detachments to forward operating locations, Marines adapt the birthday traditions to their circumstances-often with ration cakes or handwritten readings of Lejeune’s message. These improvised observances highlight that the occasion is about belonging and identity rather than spectacle.

As the Corps approaches its 250th anniversary in 2025, the official campaign echoes a familiar refrain: Marines have “fought in every clime and place,” underscoring continuity of service as a core element of readiness and Marine Corps culture.

Key Milestones in Marine Corps Birthday Traditions

  • 1775: Second Continental Congress calls for “two battalions of Marines.”
  • 1798: U.S. Marine Corps formally re-established.
  • 1921: Maj. Gen. John A. Lejeune issues Marine Corps Order No. 47, establishing November 10 as the official birthday.
  • 1925: First formal Marine Corps Ball held in Philadelphia, with a Tun Tavern plaque and dinner at the Benjamin Franklin Hotel.
  • 1937: An anniversary event features a cake shaped like Tun Tavern.
  • 1952: Cake-cutting sequence codified, honoring the guest of honor, oldest Marine, and youngest Marine.
  • 2025: Marine Corps marks its 250th anniversary.

Why the Tradition Endures

For Marines supporting modern expeditionary and littoral operations, the 1775 origin story resonates with the Corps’ founding traits-improvisation, integration, and initiative. The birthday functions on three levels: remembrance of fallen Marines and the battles that shaped the Corps; reaffirmation through a living ritual that re-teaches what it means to wear the Eagle, Globe, and Anchor; and renewal, calling Marines to carry forward the character and commitment that define the institution.

Conclusion

Whether observed in a grand ballroom, an aircraft hangar, or a remote outpost, the Marine Corps Birthday remains a global ritual of shared identity and continuity. As November 10 approaches and the Corps nears its 250th anniversary, the traditions-rooted in 1775 and sustained by generations-continue to honor service, sacrifice, and the commitment to remain ready in every clime and place.
